While that will work for the autotext, it will not work for the style.

DEAR ALL
I opened new doc as template;

cut and pasted about 100 names;

blocked all names and gave the list name as 'LIONS NAMES';

high lighted each name and added it in the new auto list name;

deleted all the names;

saved it as 'LIONS TEMPLATE.DOT';

copied it to thumb drive and loaded it in another computer;

opened 'LIONS TEMPLATE.DOT'; tools-macro-macros-organizer- and
transferred
all the 'styles' and 'auto text' entries from here to 'normal.dot' of
another
computer; closed the organizer;

saved as 'LIONS TEMPLATE.DOC'

But when I opened this document, i dont find the style 'LION NAMES'
and also
dont find it in 'auto text'.

What I am doing wrong? Pls help.

Has he created the styles? He created a new template with "autotext" but no
mention of how the styles got there? That's why I suggested STARTUP.

Did you copy the style as well as the AutoText entries? Note that if you put
the template in the Templates folder and create a new document based on it,
you won't need to copy the styles or AutoText entries.

DEAR GRAHAM
I checked the 'lion template' on my computer and confirm that both the
required style and auto text does exist.

I went to another computer and opened that computer's normal.dot; in
organizer opened 'lion template' dot and reversed the entries. I save
this
normal.dot and exit and open as word doc. In the styles I do see the
"lions
names" but in auto text tool bar, I dont see "lions name" and do not get
those 100 names copied.

I know I am pretty close but some wrong step which I am unable to figure
out.

It will be very nice if u could advice me what needs to be done to see the
'lion names' in the "all entries" and on clicking u see the list of
names???

I now have a copy of the template and have sent the OP a macro solution, but
would appreciate your insights on this.

The template contains a string of names saved as individual autotext entries
and a paragraph style with which they are supposed to be associated (they
were created I believe in Word 97).

If you use the template as a document template, as suggested in your post,
or if you copy the autotext entries to the normal template they appear in
Insert Autotext Autotext dialog and can be inserted, but don't appear in
the dropdown associated with the dedicated style nor in the list for Normal
style (apart from a couple of them) or against any other stylename used in
the template.

The macros write all the autotexts to a document then resave them as
autotexts using the same naming system as had been used previously. Then
they do appear in the list.

Most odd! I suspect it may be something to do with the way Word 97 handles
autotexts, which I seem to recall was changed at some point - either 2000 or
2002?

He has a template with a style called "Lion Names" with which the autotexts
in that template are supposed to be associated. See my reply to Suzanne.

I haven't really used AutoText that much, nor have I been much concerned
about portability, so I wasn't aware of any difference between 97 and later
versions in their handling of same, but I would find it very odd if a
template that contained both the AutoText entries and the style in which
they were created was not portable (that is, that a document based on the
template would not display the AT entries in a list for the given style).

I have a template for my Rotary bulletins that I essentially never use since
I create each week's bulletin based on the previous week's, but if I create
a new document based on that template, it does show some (four) AutoText
entries in styles that were created for that template. If I change the "Look
in" setting to Bulletin.dot, those entries are the ones listed, so they're
clearly in that template and not Normal.dot.
