Can't uninstall or update Office Std 2007

I have XP Pro on my desktop, and I put office Std on it from the retail box.
for some time now I haven't been able to update Office, and I can't uninstall
from the control panel or with the CD. When I try from CP, it just says
uninstall failed, no error #. When I try to put the CD in, i don't get
anywhere before it says setup failed. I don't think I have SP1 yet, or at
least Outlook info says nothing about it, and I don't see it in the installed
programs list. My About Outlook says this:

Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 (12.0.6023.5000) MSO (12.0.6017.5000)

The only thing that wasn't fresh with this computer was my .pst file, which
I believe started out w/ 2003.
