unable to compact all folders in OE
That's my take. Something else is tying it up.
She should take a look he www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 and make sure no other program is interfering. steve "Ron Sommer" wrote in message ... Did you install AVG in Custom Mode originally, or disable e-mail scanning
after the install? Reinstall AVG and choose Custom Mode. Uncheck E-mail Scanning when you see that option. For some reason, just unchecking it in the security center causes a conflict with the Windows Security Center. Make sure you reboot when you're done. Think about any other programs you might have. I use a mail alert program that notifies even for newsgroups as it reads dbx file size increases to activate the notification. I have to compact before turning this program on as it will cause it to stall on the Folders File. I still don't understand why it wont let you drag the prompt out of the way to see what folder it is getting stuck on. If it was me, I would go ahead and delete Folders.dbx with OE closed and see if that fixes it. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "marrie" wrote in message ... You're welcome, Marrie. Happy to be of assistance.

I got it working after about 2 hours of trying and retrying and retrying. i'll be sure to compact at least once a day to prevent this trouble from happeneing in the first place. I don't archive messages int ehinbox. I always use rules to move them to seprate folders. Thanks again!j PA Bear wrote: This KB article might be a little dense (hard to decipher) but... How to Backup and Restore Outlook Express Blocked Senders List and Other Mail Rules: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/276511/ Despite what the Applies To section says, it does apply to OE6, Marrie. Also see http://www.insideoe.com/backup/partial.htm -- ~PA Bear marrie wrote: Ok. I created a new identity and it works, for now at least. Now I can't import my OE rules. I tried editing the reg key withthe new identity but no go.I rebooted to make sure my system was rebootable but my rules are not there at all. I did a past so I now the identity number is right. Thanks. "PA Bear" wrote in message ... [I have read all replies in this thread as of this post.] Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File Identities Add new identity). Assuming all is well in the new identity: 1. Open the old identity Tools Options Maintenance Store folder will reveal the location of the identity's store (http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain). Write it down. In WinXP, Win2K and Win2K03, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start Control Panel Folder Options View. 2. Close OE. 3. Delete the file FOLDERS.DBX from your old identity's store. [NB: If you've already done this, skip this step. This will cause you to lose the mail tree structure (Folders pane), the list of newsgroups on all newsservers, all synchronization options/settings, and most message rules will need to be edited.] 4. Open OE to the new identity and Import messages from the old identity into it. See http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importOE5 5. Now delete the old one (File Identities Manage Identities). To avoid such corruption in futu - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is automatically compacting your message store. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org marrie wrote: I tried that, restarted, removed my temp files, restarted, removed my prefetch files, and restarted but i get tis message every time i try and compact. If you close OE, reopen to the new identity and compact manually again, does
the behavior persist, Marrie? If not: Did you (1) make sure that Sent Items and Deleted items were empty, (2) close OE, (3) delete the file Folders.dbx from the original identity's message store, (4) open OE, and (5) compact all folders before you imported the messages into the new identity? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org marrie wrote: follow up. the new identity worked for the first compact but now it still says the same mesage even though all folders are closed and I'm off line. I cold del folders.dbx but the last timei did that the problem still arose.
Also I can't for some reason drag and drop folders to get them to the way they were. Also the total size of the whole OE folder is about 512mb. I'm trying to shrink this down. Thanks.
