Please read the following

But is it smart enough to find your Outlook PST or do you once again need
to know
where Outlook has squirreled it away?

To say nothing of how you find a *.PST file when Windows defaults to
*hiding* the
PST extension from you and in some versions, at least, won't even cough it
up
during a search for *.PST when the extension's hidden?

I have to agree with Jimmy. I've been using computers happily enough
since the
early 80s. I've written software for most of that time, either for my own
use and
commercially and can navigate the file system in Windows, MSDOS, Mac and
*nix more
or less proficiently. I've just begun using Outlook in the last few
months and
though its great in many respects, I've found it to be the most
user-hostile app
I've ever done battle with when it comes to backing up and moving its
files
around, to say nothing of getting it to put the fool things where *I* want
them to
go today, not where it thinks I need to put them.

It really does want a Backup or at the very least, a simple File, Save As
command.

Yes, there's one of the latter on the menu. It lights up and grays out
according
to no pattern that I've yet discerned. I'm sure this will all be revealed
in time
too. But why should it not be simple?

Hi Ben,

What's that an answer to?

If it's "Where did Outlook hide my stuff?" it's not correct, at least
not for all installations. I've just been taming it on three or four
systems and on none of them did it put the PST there by default.

Go figure.

That's the default location for Outlook 2010. If you upgraded from
something else the file might still be in the old location, I suppose. If
you have a system that is still locating the PST files in the old
%user%\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook location then I'd
probably move them to My Documents\Outlook Files just to make things easier
in the future.

That sounds like a good possibility. Between beta and RTM, I've got a couple
copies of 2010 installed ... both look in the old location
(me\documents\outlook\outlook.pst) for the data file. One's an upgrade over
2003, so we can ignore that. The other would have been a fresh install of
RC1, but it still looks there. Did things change betw RC1 and RTM, maybe?

I've got my own way of storing stuff that's worked well for me for ten years
or more. Outlook will adapt to it or leave the building in disgrace. ;-)

Well, you can put the PST files wherever you like, of course. Outlook
doesn't mind, you'll just have to tell it where they are. :-)

And be prepared to arm-wrestle with it a bit.

Seriously, if you're accustomed to a truly well-written piece of
software, Outlook's file management is a mess.
