Can't open pictures that are attached to emails in OE6
I am having this problem on machine running XP Media Center SP3, IE8, OE6.
Just recently after installing IE8 istarted having trouble opening attached picstures in Outlook Express. When trying to open jpg in attachment the hourglass displays for about 1 second and then nothing. Only happens with jpg or jpeg, everything else opens fine. They use to open into picture viewer. What weird is that if I close OE6 and reopen it, I can (for awhile at least) get the pictures to open just like they always did. But at some point it stops working correctly. I have not figured out what I do that makes it stop yet. When writing an email and I attach a picture to the email if I double click on the file in the attatch line on the email they open right up. But in my inbox or sent folder or drafts folder nothing happens. I run norton internet security and have disabled email scanning but acts the same way. Any sugestions? |

As you can see, you are not alone here. This poster went through Microsoft
tier 1, tier 2 and finally tier 3 tech support and was finally advised to remove E8 until a patch was released. Archived thread on opening attachments after installing IE8: http://groups.google.com/group/micro...0verizo n.net What can you do? Try the following. If it does not resolve your problem, then revert back to IE7 for the time being. Remove IE8 and restart twice. How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700 Download IE8 to your Desktop. Do not use Windows or Microsoft Updates. Internet Explorer 8 download: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/int...r/default.aspx Restart your computer. With no other programs running, disable your anti-virus program and any spyware or spam programs you may have. If you are running a third party firewall, disable it and enable the Windows firewall. Now install IE8 from the Desktop. When you're done, restart your computer twice and then make sure your disabled programs are running again. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail] Imperial Beach, CA "JJM" wrote in message ... Was NIS running in the background when you installed IE8?
Are you running NIS 2009 v3.0? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 JJM wrote: I am having this problem on machine running XP Media Center SP3, IE8, OE6. I'm sure that Norton was running as IE* was installed automatically.
norton is NIS ver. 16.5.0.134 Doesn't say anything about 2009 "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: Was NIS running in the background when you installed IE8? Can't open pictures that are attached to emails in OE6
I found out that I can open jpegs as normal until an email that downloads
pictures or perhaps html content from the internet is opened. From then on nothing happens when I try to open a jpeg. They will display in the OE window but not if I click on the attachment. If I shut down OE and restart it it will work again until i come accross one of those emails. I am not positive it has to do with IE8, because I can't really pinpoint the time it started happening. But if it stops by uninstalling IE8, (which I have not done) it sounds like the culprit. |

Others have reported that restarting OE worked "for awhile" so you may have
something there with an attachment/Internet connection. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail] Imperial Beach, CA "JJM" wrote in message ... = YOU WILL WANT TO PRINT THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR OFFLINE REFERENCE
1. Assuming you will want to reinstall IE8, go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...3-08cdecd8852b and download the installer, SAVING it to your desktop; do NOT RUN it. 2. Disable all NIS components (i.e., anti-virus; anti-spyware; firewall; any Norton Add-ons) then IMMEDIATELY enable the Windows Firewall (Start | Settings | Control Panel | Windows Firewall)! 3. Close all open applications (anything with a taskbar icon). 4. Uninstall "Windows Internet Explorer 8" via Add/Remove Programs & reboot TWICE! 5. Repeat Steps #2 and #3 above. 6. Double-click on the file you saved in Step #1 to reinstall IE8. Follow all prompts and reboot TWICE when finished. 7. Confirm that all NIS components are enabled and that the Windows Firewall is disabled. 8. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any Critical Security Updates offered (i.e., KB960897). If a Root Certificates update is listed in the Optional Updates category, install it to take full advantage of IE7's enhanced security. 9. FWIW, you're running NIS 2009 v2.5 and only v3.x is supported in IE8. If your subscription is current, you can upgrade to v3.x for free. Contact Symantec Support. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 JJM wrote: I'm sure that Norton was running as [IE8] was installed automatically. norton is NIS ver. 16.5.0.134 Doesn't say anything about 2009 "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: Was NIS running in the background when you installed IE8? Is there any particular reason you feel there is a connection between this
and NIS? I'm not doubting you I just wondered? Thanks for the info. "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: = YOU WILL WANT TO PRINT THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR OFFLINE REFERENCE 1. NIS's real-time system protections can "hork" an IE upgrade (or the install
of a Windows Service Pack) if they're running in the background during the installation process. JJM wrote: Is there any particular reason you feel there is a connection between this and NIS?
