Is that the exact error message? Does compacting complete, or does it hang
on Folders.dbx? Grab the blue banner on the error message dialog box and
move it out of the way to see.

Is it actually saving that a file is in use? That's a common problem.
Open OE and immediately do a File, Folders, Compact All. It should work
then.

Thank you Bruce... the language was "This folder is currently in use by OE or
by another application." Nothing hangs up on folders.dbx.... I hit the OK
button and the message goes away... harriet

Michael... thanks for the instructions which I have followed and hope will
have solved the problem by the time the compacting notice shows itself again.
You are correct in that the message is actually "This folder is currently in
use by OD or by another application." Again, thanks, Harriet

Which folder? Did you move the error dialog box out of the way so you could
see what folder? I'm pretty sure it will show Folders.dbx underneath and
compacting did not complete.'

canned response

Compacting hangs on Folders.dbx after installing SP3 for XP:

This is a known issue and will never be fixed. Therefore, compact your
folders manually. The counter will be reset to zero, and a manual compact
won't hang.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

If you get it the habit of compacting before the 100th closing, (i.e. once a
week, or so), you will never see the prompt again.
