Default Office 2003 - When merging does not add the $xx.00 just a raw number

I have the new Office standard edition 2003.
with previous office software I had no problems just
merging dollar amounts. Now with 2003 it puts in just
10000 not $10,000.00. This is very inconvinient because I
deal with thousands of donors. I tried my help option but
it talks about some kind of field switch, I could not
understand what to do, I tried everything. The old way
was much easier.

See "Formatting Word fields with switches" on fellow MVP Graham Mayor's
