Default Backing up messages prior to OS upgrade

I use 98SE and OE6, and I'm planning on doing a full install of XP Pro. I
need to back up my messages in OE, and I have several different email
accounts. When I try to use the export function it fails because it can't
initialize MAPI. I don't use Outlook or Exchange. Is there a way to export
messages so I can add them back after I finish the OS install? Thanks in
advance for any help offered.

Hi DOH,

As you've discovered, the export (messages) function (mentioned) only works
with Outlook or Exchange installed on the same PC. The basic backup process
involves copying the files in the OE message store folder to another (new)
Windows folder, then later importing the files from this backup folder.

More information and options

Get OETool (www.oehelp.com/OETool/) and OEQB (www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/) and
put them in the same directory. Then there is a button in OETool that will
run OEQB and backup to 3 levels of redundancy just with a click of the
button.

Both are free.

Thanks for the advice Bruce. I notice that the option for full backup
(settings, accounts, rules, etc.) on one of those links (oehelp.com) is not
available, and I think that's what would be ideal. What I'm trying to do is
this. I have two HDs, 1-40g and 1-20g, the 40 is the master (partitioned for
OS, apps, data) and the 20 is the slave for backups. They're both setup for
98SE. I want to backup my data from the 40 and then install XP Pro (and
probably change to two partitions: one for OS/progs, one for data). Can I use
any of your suggested backup options to copy my OE settings to the 20 (or
another HD (I see OfficeMax has a Western Digital 160g ext. HD on sale for
$49), and then copy them back to the 40g once I finish installing XP? I
appreciate your help.

What you see that is unavailable at OEhelp.com.com, is the freebie backup,
not the OE Quick Backup which that page is about. See the left side and
ignore the paragraph in red.

If you set this up and backup everything,, you can copy the backup folder to
the new HD and restore it from there.

Or just use the instructions at:

Thanks Bruce,

One more question if I may. I used the quick backup app and created a backup
set on my slave drive, which is currently formatted for 98SE. After I install
XP to the master, will I then be able to install and run the backup program
in XP to retrieve that backup from the slave (which will still be formatted
for 98)? Will the differing OSs cause any problems for this strategy? Thanks.

Was 98SE OE6? AFAIK, there shouldn't be any problem, although I haven't done
quite what you are doing before. That said, the backup folder will have
everything you need to restore manually if need be, but I don't think you'll
have to.
