Default Problem Inserting Charts in Office 2007

I am unable to insert charts in Office 2007. Nothing responds when I click
on the individual chart buttons. Attempts to insert charts (regardless of
which chart type) using the "All Chart Types" window gives the following
message:

"Some chart types cannot be combined with other chart types. Select a
different chart type."

I have tried reinstalling and repairing Office 2007 many times, but the
problem with insert charts still exist.

Default Problem Inserting Charts in Office 2007

Hi Dratino,

Which MS Office app are you in when you're trying to create a chart?

Is this a new chart or do you have a chart object already selected when using the Charting tool?

Is that the only item that does not work?

If you hold the control key when starting the Office app, then create a new file and use the buttons, does the behavior change?

Default Problem Inserting Charts in Office 2007

Inserting charts doesnt work for all Office applications.

I have tried starting the various Office app in safe mode, the problem still
exists. And yes, so far it's the only problem I encounter with Office 2007.

And the problem occurs even when I am creating a new chart i.e. perfectly
new document with no charts created.

Default Problem Inserting Charts in Office 2007

Hi Dratino,

Okay, so if you start a new document in Word and then save it immediately as a .docx file and then use Insert=Chart, is the 'chart'
choice greyed out or does clicking it just not work at that point, or?

Do you have more than one version of Excel installed?

Do you get the same result after either running Diagnostics from
Office Button=Word Options=Resources
then restarting?

Tried starting new document, saving immediately and using Insert - Chart. I
am able to click on the button, the Insert Chart window appears, but upon
selecting any chart and pressing "ok", the same message appears.

"Some chart types cannot be combined with other chart types. Select a
different chart type."

And no, I have only Office 2007 installed.

And yes, I get the same results after running Office Diagnostic. No errors
were detected with Diagnostic.

Default Problem Inserting Charts in Office 2007

Hi Dratino,

What appears to be happening in this case is that Excel (which runs the chart engine for Office 2007) doesn't have a built in error
message for the problem and the one you're seeing is the one it uses.

In some of the cases where this one has come up it seems to have to do with a corrupted profile folder or permissions.

See if the steps here from Mark Has, posted in the Excel charting discussion group (link below) help.

=========
Mark has
"Had this problem as well.

Not sure if its the exact same one.

I was able to insert charts with all other user accounts except my own.

If you can do that, then its likely that its the same issue.

This is what I did to fix it.

Disclaimer: be prepared to re-enter any application settings you have had before!

1. Log in a local Admin - Very IMPORTANT!

2. Navigate to 'Documents and Settings'

3. Locate the problematic user account folder i.e. the one that is giving the chart error above...

4. BACK IT UP (to another drive)

5. Confirm back up done... then delete everything in that user account - all files and folders.

What this does effectively is wiping out all Local Settings for that user account (and any cache that Office has created, so
beware!)

6. Log out as local Admin and log in as the user that had the chart problem. Windows will now initiate a new clean setup for the
user (basically it takes parameters from 'default user')

7. At this point launch excel and do a simple list and try creating the chart.
This worked for me... hope it does for you.

Default Problem Inserting Charts in Office 2007

Bob,
I'm receiving something similar. When INSERT CHART is clicked and PIE is
selected, I receive "YOu must first close open dialogue boxes or CANCEL
EDITING MODE IN EXCEL"...after clicking ok on this, I receive the error
message about Combine Charts and pick another one...
I think there possibly might still be EXCEL 2003 on system; however, when
I'm working on this particular project, NOTHING else is open. Thanks, Fishmidi
