Default default headers & footers in templates

I've created headers and footers styles in mytemplate.dot that contain graphics. I want these headers and footers to appear everytime a user creates a document based on, or attaches mytemplate.dot. At present, no headers and footers appear, or if the user attaches mytemplate to an existing document, their headers and footers remain. Why?
I also have portrait and landscape versions of the headers and footers styles. thanks very much.

Attaching a template to a document does nothing with the headers and
footers. It principally affects the style definitions.

Any new document based on the template will have your headers and footers.
There is no automatic way to replace the headers and footers of an existing
document. Simplest manual method is to open the old document, select and
copy the content, create a new document based on your template, paste.
Tedious if you have a lot of documents. It's possible to do it by macro, but
potentially quite complex and usually not worth the trouble.
