Mark portion of paragraph w/heading style
I have Windows XP, and want to create a Table of Contents using both headings provided within Word (heading 1, heading 2, etc.), and also by manually marking certain text at a level (ALT + SHIFT + O). (Example: I have an entire paragraph of text that falls within a heading section, but I want to have only a small phrase appear in the Table of Contents to identify the information, not the entire paragraph.) I read that it should be possible to mark only a portion of the paragraph with a heading style. (I also tried unsuccessfully to use the Section Break-Continuous to define just that part of the paragraph that I want to appear in the TOC.) Thanks!

Hi Marti

Mark portion of paragraph w/heading style
Jay - I had actually tried all the methods in the thread you sent before receiving your post (Ctrl + Alt + O; hidden paragraph symbol, Body Text), but tried again as I read through the threads, and I continue to have no success. The entire paragraph still appears in the TOC (and yes, I did try all variations of checking/uncheckin Styles, Outline levels, and Table entry fields in the TOC Options dialog box). In one attempt I did get only the phrase I wanted to appear as a separate entry - but it was in addition to the entire paragraph, and had no paragraph numbering. Using the hidden paragraph symbol (and some reformatting of the rest of the paragraph) resulted in a pretty good TOC, but still no paragraph numbering as I'd hoped. Any more suggestions?

Mark portion of paragraph w/heading style
If you are using Word XP or 2003, use the style
separator. Need more information on how, let me know.
