Default Auto-correct function for captions in MS Word 2007

Hi,

When you have a lot of figures and tables in a word document, one way
to speed up your work is to use the right-click and "insert figure" or
"insert table" caption, and it will auto correct the number of figures
and tables for you. You could also use it to make a quick table of
contents.

My question is, is there a way to make that same automatic transfer for
text referring to the same figure and table as the one provided by
Word.

Example, when I write a lot in a text, I type, "....refer Figure
3...."

This is fine if I don't add any figures before "Figure 3", but when I
add more figures or tables in, as I get more stuff, I find that I have
to manually modify all the reference of Figures and Tables in the Text.
This is very annoying. Of course, the windows caption automatically
change the order as new things get added or remove, but none exists for
when you are typing in the text.

Is there a way to settle this? A macro extention for this?

Please let me know if I am not being clear.
Thanks for the help

When you're referring to a figure in the text, instead of typing
"Figure 3", click Insert Cross-reference. Choose a reference type of
Figure, and set the dropdown on the right to "Only label and number".
Click the appropriate caption in the list and click the Insert button.

The cross-references don't update automatically. When you insert a new
figure that changes all the other figure numbers, you can press Ctrl+A
to select all the text and then press F9 to update the fields (a
cross-reference is a field), or you can go to Print Preview and back.
