Default Outlook 2003 does not recieve emails

I have recently experienced unrecoverable physical damage to my hard drive
after a heavy storm here in Alberta and had to replace it with new one. I
have reinstalled the software (I only use legal software, no illegal stuff
can ever be found on my computers) and after having freshly installed
Microsoft Office 2003 I went to set up my email account. I followed
instructions provided by my webhosting company, however I've done taht a few
times so I knew exactly how to fill it up. After set up there is a button
saying "Test Account Settings" which when clicket shows that everything went
through all right. However, when I get to use Outlook, I can send messages, I
just don't recieve any. There is a bunch of emails sitting on the servers of
my web hosting company which I can access via web mail service provided
however after trying just about anything Outlook would not download it. I get
no error messages, everything gets through normal when I press Send/Recieve
button as if there were no emails to download. My email account is set up as
needed and I have tried 3 times to remove it and add a new one from scratch
but with no success whatsoever. Last resort I have tried today was to
completely uninstall Office, clear the registry afterwards and reinstall it
back on. Same thing. After setting up email account as directed I do not
recieve any emails in my Outlook Inbox. Nothing has been installed
afterwards, the entire Office has just been freshly installed. Yet it
wouldn't work. It's been like that for 3 days. I would like to be able to use
my email software again. Can anyone provide me with solution to that?

Thank you,

Mark

Proof positive that your POP server (mail.markmarek.com) is telling Outlook
that there are no messages to download.

If dotcanada.com is hosting your mail server, why are you getting the mail

Default Outlook 2003 does not recieve emails

Hi Brian,

I had a dotcanada.com tech on the phone yesterday to try to resolve the
problem and we tried a few things. We've tried setting up IMAP account in
Outlook but with no success and then we opened Outlook Express (which is a
part of XP Pro) and set up IMAP account there with exactly the same settings
and this one worked. What we found out is that Outlook must be having some
issues as the same settings in Outlook Express work but don't work with
Outlook 2003. Dotcanada.com's technicins conclusion was that "Something is
blocking Outlook 2003 from writing to the .pst file" however he said he
didn't have the knowledge to tell me how to resolve this problem.

In addition I have to confirm the following. The harddrive I have installed
the software on is brand new and all software is legal and just installed
with no changes done to it. I have installed Windows XP using installation CD
which formatted the drive and installed itself. After that I installed and
set up my wireless network - I use Microsoft MN -820 Kit for that. Then I
installed all Windows updates which were available on windows update website.
The next step I installed Microsoft Office 2003. After this installation
completed it asked me if I wanted to check for updates which I did and
installed those. In other words, there is nothing but freshly installed
operating system and office on my computer. Yet Outlook 2003 wouldn't work
even with correct email account settings. With the same settings though,
Outlook Express works fine. This is not the software I want to use for my
email correspondence. That is why I purchased Office 2003.

Any ideas? Could it be what dotcanada.com technician suggested? That
something is blocking Outlook 2003 from writing to the .pst file?

Do you have a firewall that may be blocking Outlook?

I'd think you'd see some other evidence, such as an error message, were that
the case.

Default Outlook 2003 does not recieve emails

Hi Brian,

I use Microsoft MN-700 base station which is connected directly to my
computer. MN-700 serves as the base station for my wireless network and it
also serves as a hardware firewall. Base station manual says that the
firewall can not be disabled. However I used to use it like that before and
everything worked fine. Disableing Win XP software firewall made no change to
anything. Even after it was turned off no emails could be downloaded to
Outlook 2003.

I do not get any error messages when I click Send/Recieve button in Outlook
2003. Also, under Email Accounts, there is a button saying Test Account
Settings. After clicking it everything gets through fine and all 5 tests are
checked off with the green mark as "working properly" including POP3 server.

I don't know what is going on, all software if newly installed, no changes
done to the settings whatsoever yet I'm not able to use Outlook 2003. Here's
the copy of troubleshooting log after fresh reinstall of operating system and
Office 2003:

While it may not be likely, the MTU setting in the router may be an issue.
Can you see an MTU value in the router?

While this test doesn't actually test the end-to-end path, can you access
your ISP via a web browser and see if there is a test message in your
mailbox?

The log clearly shows Outlook connecting to your POP server and the POP
server telling Outlook there's nothing to download. If you're not receiving
any mail, it's because the server says there is none. Also, there is no
SMTP session in the log, because Outlook doesn't believe there are any
messages to send. Is anything waiting in the Outbox?

Default Outlook 2003 does not recieve emails

Hi Brian,

I wasn't able to lacate MTU settings within the Microsoft Broadband Network
Utility. I also tried to search for MTU in it's help file but search returned
no results. I'm not sure what it is and whether I have any control of it with
the software which came with the base station.

My webhosting company provides me with web mail service which is what i
currently use. Using it I can read my emails and send emails. It's just not
very user friendly but at least I have something to use. After I have clicked
on test Account Settings in Outlook 2003 the Microsoft Office Outlook Test
Message shows in my inbox which I can see using web mail service. The test
message does get delivered, just none of the messages make it to the Outlook.
Also, all seems to be fine with SMTP server, using Outlook 2003 I can send
messages and those are normally delivered. I have no problem sending emails,
only recieving. Nothing gets downloaded in my Outlook 2003. I however use web
mail service to send emails as it's easier for me to hit reply there then to
copy everything into the new message created by Outlook. However, whethere
sent by outlook or via web mail, it does get delivered. Web mail is currently
the only means for me to check on my recieved emails, sice Outlook doesn't
download anything in. I don't know what is happening to me.

This is the copy of MN-700 Base Station device log. It doesn't seem to have
any relevant info though:

Default Outlook 2003 does not recieve emails

Mark Marek wrote:

My webhosting company provides me with web mail service which is what
i currently use. Using it I can read my emails and send emails. It's
just not very user friendly but at least I have something to use.
After I have clicked on test Account Settings in Outlook 2003 the
Microsoft Office Outlook Test Message shows in my inbox which I can
see using web mail service. The test message does get delivered, just
none of the messages make it to the Outlook. Also, all seems to be
fine with SMTP server, using Outlook 2003 I can send messages and
those are normally delivered. I have no problem sending emails, only
recieving. Nothing gets downloaded in my Outlook 2003. I however use
web mail service to send emails as it's easier for me to hit reply
there then to copy everything into the new message created by
Outlook. However, whethere sent by outlook or via web mail, it does
get delivered. Web mail is currently the only means for me to check
on my recieved emails, sice Outlook doesn't download anything in. I
don't know what is happening to me.

Let's see if the POP server will talk to you manually. Make sure there is a
message waiting in the mailbox on the POP server by sending yourself a
message and using hte web interface to make sure it is there awaiting
download.

Open a command prompt window and type

telnet yourpopserver 110

(If your POP server needs another port than 110, use that port instead.)
You should see a banner like this:

+OK POP3 server Version XYZ@yourisp at 22-SEP-2005 10:43:13.7000

Enter

user yourusername

You should see something like

+OK Password required for "yourusername"

Enter

pass yourpassword

You should see

+OK Username/password combination ok

Enter

stat

You should see

+OK 1 XXXXXX

where "XXXXXX" is a numeric value indicating the size of the message

Enter

list

You should see

+OK 1 message (XXXXXX octets)
1 XXXXXX

where "XXXXXX" is the size of the message.

Finally enter

quit

to disconnect.

If all of this shows up, then your network connection, the TCP/IP stack on
your PC, and the server are working correctly. If the server tells you
there are no messages, then the problem must be on the server.
