Default Outlook crashes after change to pop3

I received a message this morning about adding a hotmail pop3 account in
Express so Hotmail remains accessble. I use Messenger but find Outlook a
useful backup when messenger crashes. I therefore followed the instructions
to the letter, added a new hotmail account, made it my default, and closed. I
then tried to click on the shortcut on the desktop to check that the system
was working and couldn't open express. I restored to an earlier time, made
the old setting the default again, but saw that outlook was downloading
hotmails from the new account as well as the old. I closed, and tried to
click on the outlook icon. Again, no response. Having both listed causes
problems.

Should I have removed the old hotmail account rather than just add and make
the new account the default. If so, what happens to the saved hotmails from
the old account?

I've used restore system to get outlook back and for now and removed the
new account altogether. At least Outlook works again.

There was no info re removing the old account in Microsoft's email.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Outlook and Outlook Express are different programs. It is easier to just
use OL (Outlook) and OE (Outlook Express).

Hotmail setup as a http account has all of your messages on the Hotmail
server and on your computer. All messages includes Inbox, Sent Items, and
custom created folders. Removing the account from your computer will still
leave the messages and folders on the Hotmail server. You can go to
Hotmail.com and read and send messages or you can setup the Hotmail account
in an email program and download all of the messages.
If you use pop access, only the messages in the hotmail Inbox are downloaded
to your computer. Tools, Accounts, Properties, Advanced, 'Leave copy of
messages on the server' must checked or the Inbox messages will downloaded
to your computer and removed from the hotmail server. Copies of messages
sent from your computer are saved in Sent Items on your computer.

Ah. You read over the first sentence. You're not a physician by any
chance? They do that.

It's Outlook Express 6 and I use hotmail as the default, when Messenger
doesn't work, as my way into hotmail. So, Microsoft sent us all a message to
change settings, which I did, and which then refused to let me access OE
altogether. I had to use system restore to get it back.

One can use Live Mail but I don't like the interface. And then you lose
Messenger, whihc I rather like.

Not sure why the settings change as given in Microsoft's instructions simply
killed outlook express. Sep 1, I shall be without OE.

So do computer geeks, especially the ones who know the difference between
"Outlook", and "Outlook Express". They are as different as "butter" and
"butterfly".

Assuming you were referring to Outlook Express, not Outlook...

1. Please be careful with your shorthand references. Outlook Express (OE)
and Outlook (OL) are NOT the same application: If you refer to OL but mean
OE, you could be offered dangerous, possibly disastrous, information!

2. Assuming all was well with OE to begin with, you should be able to have
your Hotmail account running in OE as a POP3 account and as a WebDAV account
without encountering such problems...at least until 01 September.

So where do you stand now? Is Hotmail running as a WebDAV account (server
points to http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp), as a POP3
account (incoming server points to pop3.live.com; outgoing server points to
smtp.live.com), or both?

I am using OE with the old Hotmail settings. Tried Windows Live Mail but
didn't like it.

I thought that the new settings should work, but if the programme won't
open, then I really don't have a choice. Following the instructions and
adding a new account (say, without first removing the old one from the list),
seemed to confuse OE6.

Regards,

Ellen.

Again, if all was well in OE to begin with and you'd set-up the POP3 account
properly, you should not have seen this behavior.

Thank you. It appears that others are also having major problems.
