why cant i copy sent messages using message rules

Message rules allow for automatic copying/moving of incoming emails to
specified folders in OE. However, message rules do not appear to allow for
automatic saving/copying/moving of sent messages from the OE sent box.

Why?

Every time I want to maintain the full correspondence thread in a specified
folder I have to manually tell message rules to copy the sent message to the
specified folder. If I do this for every message sent, then the specified
folder begins to accumulate many copies of the same sent messages.

Is there anyway to use message rules to automatically copy any sent messages
to a specified folder?

Message rules only work automatically on incoming messages. You can create a
rule to do what you want, but you have to apply it manually.

Message Rules are only applied automatically to incoming mail.

Disable your Rule then apply it manually when needed/desired.

Unfortunately, if i manually apply a rule to copy a sent message to a
specified folder, all the other sent messages that had previously been
copied will be replicated. I suppose you will suggest that I should make
the rule to 'move' the message instead of 'copy'.

Yes. Copy will continue to copy any messages still left in Sent Items. IMHO,
it would be quicker to forget the rule and just highlight all the messages
you want to move and then right click on them and drag them to the other
folder. You then select Move or Copy. If you left click and drag them over,
they are moved and removed from Sent Items.
