OK - i was hopeful - i followed the instructions to the letter - I created a
new profile in Control Panel-mail
Then I configured Outlook 2007 to use the new profile and had it deliver
emails to the old PST - set as default
Restart.
have NOT removed the empty PST file
Still get the same message from Outlook
Any more ideas?

Transfered in what way? If you over written the existing pst-file you have
corrupted your mail profile and need to recreate it. To do so see;

I've set Outlook as my default and it appears to work - except that

Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client
cannot
fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and
set
it as your default mail client.

Default "mail client cannot fulfill msg request"

You can close the non-default one by right clicking on the root of the
folderset and choose Close. Restarting Outlook wil release the lock on the
file.
