POP3 Account Confusion

I am trying to configure Outlook 2003 with DMS extensions as a POP3 client
trying to logon to an Exchange 5.5 Mail Server. The client and the server
are on the same LAN.

I have used the Mail applet from the Control Panel to build a new Mail
Services (Outlook) profile with a POP3 Mail Server. On the POP3
configuration dialog, "E-mail Accounts", the content of the "Your Name" and
"User Name" text boxes appear to have no effect.

When I start Outlook using this profile, I can retrieve messages from a
mailbox managed by the Exchange Server. However, the messages retrieved are
always associated with the Workstation logon name that I have used instead of
any name that appears in the "Your Name" and "User Name" text boxes.

This strikes me as incorrect. Any suggestions?

"Your Name" can be anything. It's used only on outgoing messages.

"User Name" is the information used to log into the server.

You don't also have an Exchange account in this profile, do you?

It looks as if you've identified my problem. Both Exchange Servers
involved have an account that uses the same name that I enter when I logon to
the workstation. Setting up a unique workstation logon account name seems to
solve my problem. "User Name" now has to have the POP3 account name that I'm
trying to access but it also has to be prefixed with its domain name.

In regard to your question, "Do I have an Exchange Account in this
profile", the answer is yes. My Mail Services profile names a "Microsoft
Exchange Server" account that Outlook talks to using RPC and also another
POP3 Mail Server that happens to be an Exchange Server. I can now retrieve
mail from the POP3 acount I name whereas before the POP3 server was sending
me mail from its account that matched my workstation logon name.
