Can't Open Jpeg files in OE6

In case you were addressing this to me, that's exactly what I did later on
(reinstalling without e-mail scanning).

When I initially just disabled e-mail scanning (having already installed it
previously) I had no problems with the Windows Security Centre. Only the
AVG icon on the taskbar showed an error. On opening the main AVG window it
just showed that e-mail scanning was not working. This was only a minor
irritant and I could live with it.

As I said, later on I had an opportunity to reinstall AVG, so then took the
custom route and never installed scanning, as had been suggested in this NG
previously.

I just wanted to make the point that I had no particular issues at any
stage.

Your "why not" response prompted me to respond to you. Reinstalling AVG was
certainly good advice. The OP dropped out of the thread, so we don't know if
it helped, but it was worth a shot.

There /are/ some people that use AVG with e-mail scanning enabled and have
no problem. Maybe even most. But if there is a compatibility issue with
AVG's e-mail scanning, reinstalling it is the only way to completely get its
hooks off your machine.

Remember the "paper clip" issue with version 7x? Of course not everyone was
affected by it, but there was enough for me to prepare this canned reply.

that can cause this issue.

Normally, I would just say to turn off the e-mail scanning feature. It is a
redundant layer of protection that causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently.

However, with AVG you may need to remove and reinstall AVG and choose
Custom Mode. Uncheck E-mail Scanning when you see that option. For some
reason, just unchecking it in the AVG Security Center causes a conflict with
the Windows Security Center.

Ok.

Your little comment about paperclips made my eyes 'prick up', so to speak.

Last summer I suddenly started receiving a large number of msgs that showed
a paperclip (attachment) but had no attachment. I thought it may have had
something to do with graphics but decided to accept this as one of life's
little irritants when at some stage that stopped.

I don't remember why (maybe after a Windows reinstal?). I had AVG Free
running with e-mail scanning before and after, IIRC. Only more recently did
I shut off that feature.

I use OE 6. What do you mean by v7.x? IE 7? This is what I use, though
less frequently now, as I also have Firefox.

What do you mean by v7.x?

AVG Version 7.0 & 7.5 had the issue with the paper clip showing when there
was no attachment. AFAIK, that was resolved with AVG Version 8.0.

Right! That may have been the reason for the disppearance of the paperclip;
I did upgrade to AVG 8 later last year.

One of life's little mysteries solved, maybe..

I am having the exact same problem on machine running XP SP3! I didn't
connect the install of IE8 with it but it was about that time that it started.

When trying to open jpg in attachment the hourglass displays for about 1
second and then nothing. Only happens with jpg or jpeg. They use to open
into picture viewer.

What weird is that if I close OE6 and reopen I can get the pictures to open
just like they always did. But at some point it stops working correctly. I
have not figured out what I do that makes it stop yet.

When writing an email and I attach a picture to the email if I double click
on the file in the attatch line on the email they open right up. But in my
inbox or sent folder or drafts folder nothing happens.

I run norton internet security and have disabled email scanning but acts
the same way.
