Is there a way for me to specify only one file where my pictures are located?
I want my pictures only to be drawn from My Documents/My Pictures and no
where else on the computer or network. When I went into the Locate Pictures,
I couldn't find the option to specify a particular folder. I am using Office
2007.

???

In the days of old when men were bold before toilets were invented, they
laid a load ... Nevermind, different story.

Office used to look for pictures in the same folder as the it looked in the
last time you went on the search for pictures, or other files for that
matter. So, if you navigate to MyDocuments/MyPictures, then the app you are
inserting pictures into should always be the one you want.

I just opened two files and selected InsertPictureFrom File in the first
document and went into a sub-folder of the MyPictures folder, then made the
same menu selection from the second document, and the search location
automatically came up to be the same location. I closed Word without saving
then opened again and the new document's Insert Picture reverted to the
MyDocuments/MyPictures folder.

I'm using Office '03.

POINT OF ORDER
Technically, you want to specify a FOLDER where your pictures are located.

Try this if you are using Office 2003:

1) Open Word
2) Now point your mouse on the Menu bar and select Tools
3) the last item should be options. Select it
4) One of the tabs should be File Locations. Click on it
5) Click on item called ClipArt Pictures and at the bottom there is an
item called Modify
6) Now you can select the folder for this.

It works for me so it should work for you as well.

He's using Office '07. That is clearly stated ...

The DEFAULT location for the Office Suite to look for anything is in the
MyDocuments folder or the respective sub-folder if there is one. Clip Art is
one exception. I forget at this moment where ClipArt is stored, but unless
you move it to your MyPictures folder, I'm not sure you will enjoy the edits
you have described.

It doesn't matter where it is located. You choose the folder where the
application should point to when clicked!

The default in 2003 was also in MyDocuments and MyPictures is also
located in there. Have you tried it? If not I suggest you better try
it so that we know your experience of the process. I am not currently
sitting on a system with Office 2007 installed but I don't think there
is any change from this.

It matters because ClipArt and pictures are not the same thingl Pictures are
technically files that come through the MyPictures folder and its various
sub-folders, just as document files come from the MyDocuments folders and
assorted sub-folders.

ClipArt is stored in an MSOfffice folder somewhere. It should be in Program
Files/Microsoft Office/Clipart.

The OP asked how to point Office to his pictures, you told him how to point
to clipart. I'm saying that clipart and pictures are different, and if you
change the pointer to the clipart, then you have to move the clipart so it
is where the pointer says. Pictures by default are searched for in the
MyPictures folder.

The problem is, pictures that are downloaded or saved from e-mail messages
might not go to the MyPictures folder as a matter of default, and therefore
will be difficult to locate when it comes time to insert them into an Office
file, such as a Word document.

Just tried it. The pictures I receive in an email message GOES to
MyPictures by default. There is, of course an option to save somewhere
else but the default is My Pictures folder.

I also tried saving an image from the webpage and this too points to
MyPicture folder. Perhaps your settings have changed somehow. this
needs to be looked at closely if it is really serious.

If you Right Click the paperclip that indicates an attached file, then
select Save Attachment, the result will be a file saved to a location that
is not the MyDocuments or MyPictures folder. This is the default operation
of Outlook Express. If the OP is storing files in this manner, he will not
be able to fine the saved files or images when he wants them.

If the attachment is opened and FileSave As is selected, the attached file
will go to MyDocuments or MyPictures, as is appropriate for the attached
file.

None of this matter though because the OP's question was about directing
Office '07 to look for pictures in a particular location, but that location
is already the location he wants Office to look in. The caveat is, if an
Office app is sent somewhere else to look for a picutre or file to Insert,
then it will keep looking in that location for all subsequent Insert
operations will default to the previous location, no matter what the setting
is in ToolOptionsFile Locations.

When the Office app is closed, then re-opened, it will first seek files for
new Insert operations in the MyDocuments or MyPictures, as is appropriate
for the file type to be inserted.
