When I click on the Calendar in Outlook and to the left under "My Calendars"
there is a (1) beside "Calendar" checkbox. Is this some sort of comment? I'm
not sure why there is a blue (1) there or how to see what this means...help?

It means there is an unread meeting request in the calendar. You can search
for under messages (switch to By Category view and browse the list) or right
click on the calendar folder and mark all read.
