Problem with numbered list
You need to increase the distance between the number and the text of
the paragraph so that even large numbers fit, without pushing the text to the following tab stop. If numbering was not applied with paragraph styles, put the cursor in the first numbered item, choose FormatBullets and Numbering, click Customize, specify the desired amount for "Text position", and then click OK. If you have applied numbering with paragraph styles, simply access the Bullets and Numbering dialog box from the Modify Style dialog box, click Customize, and specify the desired amount for "Text position". Each entry is numbered, with the title appearing, then on the next line (using Ctrl-Enter) the author and journal details so that there is no number on this line eg 1. Some title of some paper author, journal details 2. some other paper author, journal, details for some reason, at about entry 100, the titles of the papers are getting bumped over to the right, almost like there is a tab or indent. I have turned on the thing that shows non printable characters and there is a horizontal arrow pointing right that is obviously bumping the titles over. However, I have no idea what it's there for. If I try to delete by hitting backspace at the start of the title, it goes to the margin and the numbering disappears. I have checked the little triangle marker things on the ruler at the top of page and they seem to be the same throughout what I have ended up with is 99. A title of some other paper author, journal, details 100. a title of some other paper mysteriously tabbed over to the right author, journal, details (with the punctuation stuff showing it looks like this) 99. A title of some other paper author, journal, details 100. ------ a title of some other paper mysteriously tabbed over to the right author, journal, details I don't know what is happening or how to fix it. If I delete everything to the last good reference and hit enter for a new item on the list, the same thing happens please help! |

Problem with numbered list
To add to what Stefan has said, I would strongly advise that you right-align
the numbers (so that the periods following the numbers are aligned). When you choose right alignment in the Bullets and Numbering dialog, Word adjusts the other settings to accommodate this, though you may want to tweak them to your liking. For one- and two-digit numbers, I like to set the indents and number position such that single digits are flush left and double digits hang into the left margin. For single-, double-, and triple-digit numbers, I think I'd probably set it up so that double digits were flush left, single indented, and triple outdented. That done, I like to allow 0.1" to 0.15" between the period and the text. -- Suzanne S.
