In a word table I'm trying to multiply 50x$7.66.

Press Ctrl+F9 to insert a pair of field delimiters { } and inside them type

{ = 50 * $7.66 }

Then press Alt+F9 to toggle off the display of field codes.

Default how do I multiply numbers across in a table

You can also use Excel-like formulas and Excel naming conventions. So, if 50
is in the fifth column of the fourth row and 7.66 is in the sixth column of
the fourth row, the formula for the cell where you want the answer is =(E4*F4)
. If this is a price list, you can copy the formula into the following rows,
but unlike Excel, you have to edit the row numbers for each.

I recommend, though, that you use Excel instead of Word for price lists.
