Al,

Got an idea from another MVP.

You may have a damaged identity. Create a new identity and test it,
(FileIdentitiesAdd New Identity). If that solves the problem, import
your saved messages from the old ID and then delete it.
(FileIdentitiesManage Identities).

When you deleted the TIFs, did you check the box to Delete Offline

Another thought that can't hurt. I did everything I could think of before
I downloaded SP2. TIFs, SpyBot, AdAware, CheckDisk, Defrag, etc. I Defrag
about once a month normally. After the download, a few things seemed
sluggish. I Defragged again and it took about 20 minutes. Normally it
takes about 3 or 4. Just one more thing to try.

I run Adaware, SpyBot, Bazooka, and X-Cleaner regularly. I run NAV once a
week and run DiskDoctor and WinDoctor. I visit pcpitstop.com regularly and
Defrag if they suggest it. Right now I'm at 17% data fragmentation and 7%
file fragmentation. They are suggesting that I Defrag.

I didn't see this in the list of things you tried. I did send it to you,
yes?

You may have to unblock the attachment with the Attachment Manager.

See this KB article:

Sorry, Bruce, yes you did suggest it and my reply was:

Are you refering to this:

You can open a blocked file from a known source if you want to. To open
a
blocked file, follow these steps:

1. Right-click the blocked file, and then click properties.
2. In the general tab, click unblock.

When I right-click on the attachment name after clicking on the paper
clip
icon no pop-up menu appears.

If I double-click the email to open it in its own window and then right
click the attachment there is no properties selection in the pop-up
menu.
If I select save as... from this menu I get "The command failed to
execute"
message.

I'm not sure what "known source" means. I assume it means that the file
is already saved to disk. It is not, that is the problem; I can't save
it to disk as well as open it. Unless there is some way to get at the
attachment that doesn't involve OE?

I'm hoping to get someone to help out with this. So they are aware,
please post the original problem and everything you have tried so

Original post

OS: Windows XP home edition SP2

Outlook Express 6 - 6.00.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

I'm not sure when this started, but for some reason I can't open or
save
attachments in my email anymore. I first noticed it about a week ago.

The last one I tried to open was a .wmv file that is 320 kb.

When I try to open the attachment I get the following message:

"Windows found that this file is potentially harmful. To help protect
your
computer, Windows has blocked access to this file."

When I try to save the attachment I get the following message:

"There was an error saving one or more of the attachments. Please
check
your free disk space and try again."

My disk is far from being full and I have the "Do not allow
attachments to
be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" box unchecked in
the
security page under options in the tools menu item. I'm also running
Norton
Anti-virus which was installed as part of Norton Internet Security
2004, but
I have email scanning disabled.

I searched for this on the internet and found other people were having
the
same problem, but no one had a solution for it.

/Original post

Steps that I have taken:

1. To verify that the attachment is not the problem I forwarded it to
a Yahoo email account and then downloaded it from there. The
attachment saves to disk ok and runs fine. I didn't think the
attachment was the problem because I can't open or save any other
attachment in OE, but I had to be sure. I also have a second computer
running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 so I forwarded the email to
myself and used OE on the that computer to retrieve the email. The
attachment opens and saves fine on the second computer.

2. Tried to open and save the attachment in safe mode - same problem.

3. Used msconfig Selective Startup option and stopped startup
programs, System.ini, Win.ini, and all but essential services from
loading. Still can't open or save attachment.

4. Went into Tools=Options and on the Security page under Virus
Protection under Select the Internet Explorer Security Zone I selected
the Internet Zone (Less secure, but more functional) radio button.
Still no luck.

5. Uninstalled SP2 and ran sfc /scannow afterwards. I now can open
and save the attachment.

6. Just to be sure, I uninstalled Norton Internet Security and System
works and then reinstalled service pack 2. Now I can not open or save
the attachment same as before.

System Info:

Original OS was Windows ME. Later upgraded to Windows XP Home Edition
Service Pack 1 Version 2002. Later upgraded to Service Pack 2 through
Windows Update program. I have always kept up with Windows updates.

There is one more peculiar problem that I should mention. Maybe it's
related, maybe not. When I have Norton Anti-virus scan my emails or
when Norton's anti-spam is turned on, if I open OE and alter close it
when I or someone else on another account opens OE to get their email
we get this error:

Typo: in the above paragragh the word "alter" should be "after."

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'your_account',
Server:'your_POP3_server', Protocol:POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): NO,
Socket error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800ccc0e

The only way around this is to reboot the system.

The way I found around this is to disable Norton email scanning and
anti-spam. This doesn't happen on my other system either.

Other than those two problems the system runs fine. There are no
errors or warnings in the event logs.

Thanks for all your help Bruce. Good luck. I hope to hear from you
soon.

Addendum:

I deleted cookies and temporary internet files. Also compacted folders.

Still getting the same results.

It may or may not help, but you can try editing this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Micro soft\Outlook
Express\5.0\Mail

Where GUID is the big, long number associated with your identity.
Look in the right hand pane for the following value:

"Safe Attachments"=dword:00000000 --allows attachments
"Safe Attachments"=dword:00000001 --disallows attachments

In OE go to Tools | Options | Security and set OE to the Internet Zone.
Then open the message and try to open the attachment.

The key is set to 0 - allow attachments. It appears that setting this key
is the same as setting the "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opend
that could potentially be a virus" checkbox.

I tried it both ways, closing and opening OE both times, still no luck.

I just discovered something interesting. On my other computer I have the
"Do not allow attachments..." box checked and OE will still open and save
the attachment.

When that box is checked on this machine the attachment is greyed out under
the paper clip icon.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Original post

OS: Windows XP home edition SP2

Apparently this problem had to do with my file associations. I had .wmv and
..wav and many other file types set to open with Winamp. When I reset those
files to open with the default Windows Media Player my email attachment
problems went away.

Many thanks to Bruce Hagen and others for their suggestions and patience
while helping me work through this problem.
