Default Reinstall 2003 after HDD failure

I have recently suffered a hard disc failure and reinstalled all my data and
programs from a backup. Now when I boot up, I get one box that says that
Normal dot is being used by another program or person and do I want to save
over the original. This is odd because there's no reason why word should be
opening on boot up. Also I get another window on boot up that says that
Powerpoint failed to start properly. Again why is it trying to start anyway?
This message always appears twice even though I untick the box that asks if I
want to retry.

Why is this happening?

You have asked "Why is this happening?". The short answer is that because
your office installation is completely corrupted. First you should try the
following:

1) Launch either Word or Excel in Office 2003;
2) On the Menu bar, got to HELP, and look for an item called Detect &
Repair;
3) click on it and let it try to fix it.

when this has finished (it takes about 3 to 4 minutes) then try to launch
your troublesome applications and post any error messages you get.

In word, also try to go to Tools, SAVE (this is a tab on tools menu). Now
make sure the tick marks are only against:

Allow background Saves
Embed Linguistic data
Save AutoRecover (10 Minutes)
Embed Smart Tags

Hope this helps.

Thanks but unfortunately this did not fix the problem. Looks like a full
re-install from the CD is needed.
