Default Replacing styles

Hi,
I'm working in Office 2007, in some esp large documents I would like to go
through it with the help of search/replace tool looking for words with
specific style and replacing the style used on them. For some reason, Ms Word
doesn't replace the style completely, instead it creates a third style which
is a kind of a combination of the two. This is something that I definitely
don't want.
Is there any way to avaid that, and get a complete style substitution.
Thank you in advance,
Arthur
