I cannot open Word from the programs menu

When I open Word (2000) from the Start Programs menu, it hangs and an error
is generated. The log says it was an access violation (Dr Watson log).

The program spalsh screen comes up, then the error dialog, then it closes
automatically.

But when I type the path and winword.exe into the RUN menu, it opens without
having the access problem.

Word 2000 has been uninstalled and reinstalled, fixed, etc without success.

Windows 2000 running on a home PC.

Antivirus software disabled, no difference. Epson ink monitoring disabled,
no difference, etc.
