Default OE and Spam filtering software.

Hi group,

I've recently started getting a lot of Spam. Can anyone recommend a good
add-on program which can filter out spam. The message rules in Outlook
Express is too time consuming to keep adding new spam addresses to all the
time.

Ideally I'd like a spam filter program which would just have been select the
spam messages, right click and the program would automaticly scan the
selected emails for there From email address and auto-add it to a block
message area etc.

Anyone know of a program which might do this?

Gavin

Message rules are a waste of time because these vermin know how to keep one
step ahead. Instead, try one of the "learning" tools which will
(surprisingly quickly) learn what you consider to be spam. The best I've
used are SpamBayes and Spamihlator - the latter works particularly well for
OE. You'll need to "train" it occasionally, but that's not onerous.

Alternatively find an ISP which offers the "Brightmail" filtering service,
which catches 95% of the torrent aimed at me, with negligible (!) false
positives (the bane of other offerings).

MSOE message rules are pretty futile, for spam control; unless you want to
set up a "white list" set of rules (some call this "filtering in"; it pretty
much makes an email address useless for open receipt of email, though). A
better solution is some kind of third party add-on, or proxy. Two that are
highly regarded are Naive Bayesian proxy filters:

Blocking messages is ineffective, because the spammers change them every
time.

I use the following program with great success:
http://keir.net/k9.html

K9's primary weapon is Bayesian filtering. It takes a little training to
learn what your mail looks like, but ultimately you will see it get
better and better. It also has whitelist/blacklist capabilities, as well
as DNS Blackhole list lookups.
