Need help placing photos in newsletter
I'm still trying to work my way through Word (long-time WordPerfect user but
new to Word) and set up our church newsletter. I keep running into problems because of the unique characteristics of what I am trying to do. I scanned a pen-and-ink drawing of the church for the top and created 3 columns for the basic newsletter. I used a page break and continuous section break to place a full-size table on the following page. Can you help with the following? (1) I would like to be able to place a photo *below* the columns but have it extend across the columns. In fact, I would like to be able to re-size it without distorting the photo ("maintain proportions" would be the WordPerfect term). I can't find any way to do this. I have tried placing it in a text box, but I can't seem to change the text box itself. Only the photo changes, and the proportions are distorted since I did not find a function to "change size." I also experimented with pasting a photo and then using borders. Same problem! To complicate matters, I would also like to include text under the photo but within the box or borders. Can someone help me do this? (2) After entering a page break or continuous break, how can I move the cursor to the *right* side of the break and continue from that point? I am using Office 2007 and Vista Home Premium. Incidentally, I bought two Office manuals but they have not been of much help -- too little space is devoted to Word. So, I ordered a Word manual from amazon.com and hope that will help. Thanks, MaryL |

1. You need to create a single-column section for the picture; this will
require two section breaks, but if you enter a single empty paragraph (between two sections of multi-column text) and format it as one column, Word will take care of inserting the breaks for you, and you can then insert the picture in that paragraph. 2. Theoretically, if you drag a corner of the picture (instead of a side), it will be resized without changing the aspect ratio, but I'm not convinced of this. A better approach is to change the size through a dialog (Format Picture in Word 2003 and earlier). In Word 2007, click on the dialog launcher in the bottom right corner of the Size group on the Picture Tools Format tab to open the Size dialog. Change the setting for height or width, and, assuming that "Lock aspect ratio" is checked (as it is by default), the other dimension will change accordingly. You can insert a picture and caption in a text box, frame, or table cell and apply borders to that. Note that text wrapping behaves differently depending on whether you insert a single-column section (columns will wrap above the picture) or insert a full-width text box or frame (columns will continue below the picture and then wrap back to the top of the page). -- Suzanne S. Any chance you also have Publisher on your computer?

Thanks, Suzanne. That worked perfectly.
You really have given me a lot of help, and I appreciate it. MaryL "Suzanne S. Barnhill" wrote in message ... 1. No, I don't have Publisher. However, that would not help because I am
trying to use a program that the church secretary can also use. The irony is that I am a long-time WordPerfect user. I am so familiar with that program that I could easily do all these things, but the church has Word 2003, so I am trying to do something that will help them. It will be easier once I get everything set up because I only have this one task to do in Word. I finished the first "edition" this afternoon, and it really looks good. I hope I don't run into too many additonal glitches as the weeks pass. I did experiment by doing some of it in WP and saving to Word, but -- just as I expected -- a lot of the formatting was changed or lost. MaryL "JoAnn Paules" wrote in message ... I assume you've taken the precaution of making sure that your document is in
Word 97-2003 format from the get-go. If this is the only job you'll be doing with Word 2007, you may want to make that your default file format. -- Suzanne S. Thanks, Suzanne. Yes, I did make Word 97-2003 my default file format.
