Sigh

Then why were you asking where to find Indexing Options??? What problem are
/you/ experiencing regarding compacting? Why are you even replying to this
thread from last December instead of starting your own thread?

Default I am always asked to Compact

Then the problem is anything here /except/ Windows Search.

The problem is with the registry counter that gives you the prompt after 100
closings of OE. It is being increased quicker than it should be and even if
you are not using OE.

There is a growing number of programs and actions that may be causing this
after installing SP3. Do you have any of the following?

IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLL
Windows {Desktop} Search
Mailwasher
Nero plug-in(s)

Opening EML files while OE is closed will also contribute to the registry
count.

Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls, especially if
they were running when you installed SP3.

Archived thread discussing this issue in June 2008:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...d35fbfa457fd6f

In the case of Windows Search, (the #1 offender), you have to tell it to
stop indexing OE.

Windows Search. Set Desktop Search Options:
http://www.microsoft.com/australia/w...h/options.mspx

In the Windows Control Panel | Indexing Options | Modify. Clear the check
box for Outlook Express.

In the case of Nero Scout, see Item 2.3 on page 8 here.
ftp://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero...oScout_Enu.pdf

In the option to exclude selected file types from indexing, be sure to add
these file types:

..eml, .dbx & .nws
-----------

If you compact manually, does that remedy the problem?

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Compact Your OE Folders:
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in the Inbox or Sent Items. Create your own user defined
folders and move the messages you wish to save to them. Empty Deleted Items
folder daily. Although dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2GB, I
recommend about a 300MB max for less chance of corruption.

Information about the maximum file size of the .dbx files that are used by
Outlook Express:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=903095

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

this
after installing SP3. Do you have any of the following?

IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLL
Windows Desktop Search
Window Live Mail (even if it was removed)
Mailwasher
Nero plug-in(s)

Opening EML files while OE is closed will also
contribute
to
the
registry

Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party
firewalls,
especially
if
they were running when you installed SP3.

In the case of Windows Desktop Search, (the #1
offender),
you
have
to
tell
it to stop indexing OE.

Windows Desktop Search. Set Desktop Search Options:
http://www.microsoft.com/australia/w...h/options.mspx

In Windows Desktop Search: Control Panel | Indexing
Options.
Click:
Modify
and clear the check box for Outlook Express.

In the case of Nero Scout, see Item 2.3 on page 8 here.
ftp://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero...oScout_Enu.pdf

In the option to exclude selected file types from
indexing,
be
sure
to
add
these file types:

..eml, .dbx & .nws

Then why were you asking where to find Indexing Options??? What problem
are
/you/ experiencing regarding compacting? Why are you even replying to
this
thread from last December instead of starting your own thread?

I downloaded it just to see what was what and it added that option to
the
Windows Control Panel. I already removed the program as I don't
want/need
it. I know where my stuff is stored.

You /are/ running OE with XP or a newer OS?

Nero Backup runs in the background and is a likely candidate.
See

disabling it stops the problem. You may have to restart your

As for any other programs listed, you find them in Start |

there
is a

there...but I can not find a Windows Desktop search. Is
this

Windows Search?

I also do not have a Nero on my computer (At least I do not

call
Nero
Backup.

If I have these other programs, I am not sure where to find
