Just for the record, when I set up OE, I had moved my message store folder to a subfolder under My Documents. Do you think it could cause a problem? Did you move your store /exactly/ as outlined here?... http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#movestore And also, is there any way to retrieve the data (system restore??)? No. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (Shell, IE/OE) & Security rpm wrote: I have enabled hidden files view. For all folders on my computer. I found one of the missing folder's dbx file in one other location. But it was only 75KB and I suspect it was created during my endless trials of 'outlook express repair' tools. If you did not move it as PA Bear indicated in the link he posted, you
overwrote the entire thing with blank DBX files. If a search cannot find any other DBX files, you are, I'm afraid, well and truly, "screwed." Sorry. http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#movestore Failing to create an empty folder first to contain the DBX files, before attempting the move will do this. I'd recommend you create an empty folder in a convenient location other than the rather convoluted path to a file in the user profileMy Documents folder. I keep mine in the root directory of the C:\ drive. And its name is a really difficult one to find, i.e., it's called Mail. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express Please reply to newsgroup only. Also, I did that when I set up the computer, not after setting up email connections and rules, etc. So I know that all folders were empty when I did it years ago. I think the problem came about only after it compacted the folders. :-( Guess I am 'screwed' in that respect then. No other choice to get that data back, right? -rpm ----- |

No other choice to get that data back, right? -rpm Some antivirus programs can cause this problem. Norton's has been known to write all "zeroes" to a DBX file and shutting down a computer while compacting of the message store is in progress can also cause it. But since you say you've enabled the Show Hidden Files choice and can find no other DBX files, unless you have a backup on CD or tape, you're most likely out of luck. Wish I could be more positive but I don't see any other choice. Sorry. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express Please reply to newsgroup only. |

"Bruce Hagen" wrote And. Backup & Resto http://www.insideoe.com/backup/ Bruce Hagen MS-MVP - (IE/OE) ~IB-CA~ Great program. Instances like this one show how necessary it is to do back up and that program is 4 (3, if you have one click set up for Windows) clicks and you're done! Alias wrote in message oups.com... I am in an unfortunate situation where some of my folders were automatically compacted and now I cannot see any messages in those folders. Details about my computer: Compaq R3000Z Laptop Windows XP with SP2 Outlook Express 6 Using hotmail as well as POP emails Folders with lost messages are on Local Folders I have gone through some of the suggestions like: - Try File | Import - Moving the .dbx file to another location and trying to open it from there - I even bought DBXpress from oehelp.com, but no good I see that the file exists in the message store, and it is non-zero bytes, so I have *some* hope. Can something be done to retrieve the messages in those folders? I have about 2 years' worth emails there :-( Thanks in advance, rpm |

Your only chance, as I indicated, is to run DBXpress in its extract from
disk mode. If the messages are still on the disk clusters, then DBXpress in this mode will find them. steve "rpm" wrote in message oups.com...
