Default How do I insert slide numbers

I selected View Slide Master, then Insert Slide Number, I unchecked
everything except Slide Number, then clicked Apply to All. I see (#) in the
right footer in Slide Master, but when I select Normal View, the slide
numbers vanish.

Very user-unfriendly!

Insert / Text group / Header & Footer / window of same name launches / Slide
tab / click in Slide number so that it has a tick (check) in it / Apply to All

The Header Footer dialog box is on the View menu in PPT 2003. View | Header
and Footer.

Basically, you need two things for a footer in PPT: 1) a placeholder, 2) to
populate the placeholder with text (or slide number, date, etc.).

What you select and type in the View | Header and Footer dialog will
populate the placeholder you added to the slide master.
