Default Why the stumbling block when I try to Paste ?

I've wondered about this since I upgraded to Word 2002.

If I copy a sentence from a web page or any other source, I cannot paste to
Word 2002 unless Word was open when I copied. The Paste option in Edit is
greyed out.

Often I copy a paragraph from a website, then open Word, only to have to go
back to the web page and recopy after Word 2002 has opened. Only then does
the paste option appear. This did not happened with my earlier version of
Word.

Does anyone know of an option to avoid this difficulty ?

I think most people do not have this problem with Word 2002. You probably installed a Word add-in that uses the Windows clipboard to create a toolbar or icon or something... when you start Word, the add-in overwrites what you copied to the clipboard with its own stuff, and then possibly clears the clipboard when it is done.

Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure that I understand, though. By
'add-in' do you mean a separate program, like a 'plug-in' ? I have not
added any plugin's to Word.

Yes, plug-ins or add-ins or macros are the usual causes of the behavior you're experiencing. Most people don't have any problems copying stuff from other applications before Word is open, then opening Word and pasting the stuff into Word.

To help me remember what I might have done, do you have any suggestions as
to what type of program I might have installed. I didn't add anything
referred to as a Word plugin, but perhaps it is an unrelated program. I've
really added very little, other than a photo viewing program, ZoneAlarm,
Spybot, Adaware & AOL.

If it has anything to do with Clipboard, is this related: although
Clipboard seems to work, I cannot get the Clipboard Viewer to appear in the
Accessories part of the Start Menu, even though Control panel Add or
Remove Programs Add/Remove Windows Componants Accessories and Utilities
Accessories shows Clipboard Viewer is checked.

This is a known issue when you have the Works add-in for Word installed -
and I believe it also occurs if you use Word as editor for Outlook.

Thank you.
Pardon me if this question seems amateur, but how would I tell if my
computer came with the Works add-in you refer to ? My Program Files
contains a folder titled "Microsoft Works Suite 2004". It contains several
items including one called "Windows Installer Patch". Program Files also
contains a separate folder titled "Microsoft Works". If either of these
contain the add-in you are referring to I guess I am stuck with this
limitation and will have to remember to open Word before I copy.
Thanks again.

While I have only one "merge" entry under tools ("Address Book Mail Merge"),
I will study the instructions in the web page you directed me to.

The multiple entries is another more serious potential problem related to
the add-in. I used the link merely to show you how to easily uninstall the
