Populating a table with Paragraph numbers AND text
Help: I've written a test document with different sections and headings (formatted using Styles) and and I want to have a summary table at the end that has all these different section numbers AND their associated titles. FOr example ... 1.0 Car tests 1.1 Door tests 1.1.1 handle tests 1.1.2 window tests 1.1.3 lock tests I want to build a table that has these test numbers AND names and in one column along with a column for PASS, FAIL, etc. SO my table would look like ... TEST PASS FAIL COMMENTS 1.0 Car tests 1.1 DOor Tests 1.1.1 handle tests 1.1.2 lock tests where, for example, "1.1.2 lock tests" would be in one cell of the table. I've tried using cross-references but only the number gets ported into the table. Is there any way to grab both the test number AND name together in one cell of a table ???? thanks for any suggestions kth |

Cross-referencing is good way to do this, you are just missing one last step.
When you select the Numbered Item or Heading in the Cross reference dialog, the default setting is the Paragraph number (ie your 1.1.1), Insert this as you have been, then change the "Insert reference to:" to Paragraph text, this will now insert the text for 1.1.1, namely "handle tests". In the cell you will have to insert a space between the two fields. I dont know of a faster way to do this, maybe someone else will post here with a suggestion. This is for 2003 and prior, maybe different for 2007. Hope this helps DeanH "kth" wrote: Help: I've written a test document with different sections and headings (formatted using Styles) and and I want to have a summary table at the end that has all these different section numbers AND their associated titles. Hi Dean: I understand what you're saying. Except I was trying to make the "2" step process (grabbing test number, space, grabbing test title) into a 1 step process (getting both in one shot). Your way works, it's just a shame there's not a faster/easier way. THanks for your help. keith |

Thanks for the feedback, glad it is working for you.
I have always wanted a Cross-reference option that included both ParaNo. and Text as I am always wanting both. Hopefully someone else may come up with a solution, but hopefully not with too much macro code ;-) TTFN DeanH "kth" wrote: Hi Dean: I understand what you're saying.
