Bizarre MSIMN, and other problems
My computer is doing it's dead level best to make me crazy. I have a home-based business and my PC is my livelyhood. Yesterday I started getting the following error from TAPISRV.EXE: "This program has performed an illegal operation..." Clicking on details gives me this: TAPISRV caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff7b997. As for Outlook Express, I have removed, rebooted and reinstalled MS Outlook Express twice now with out any resolution of the problem. Is there something I missed, or should be doing that I'm not? Dial-Up Networking Does Not Start: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241886 By clicking on Tapisrv.exe, you may have started a service you don't really want to have running but since you don't mention what operating system you are using, it's hard to be sure. Bizarre MSIMN, and other problems
Dear Sir, I'm running Win98SE. Dial up networking starts fine, as long as I doubleclick on my backup Tapisrv.exe file. Clicking on Tapisrv.exe on my D: Drive is the ONLY thing which lets me do anything on my computer that isn't on the Start Menu. Even then, since this problem effectively kills Windows Explorer, most of the programs in the Sart Menu won't work either, including Dial Up Networking. That is, until I activate the backup, which it is a darned good thing that I had, or I'd be in big trouble. BTW, I have tried deleting, renaming, moving and/or exterminating the original file on my C: Drive and replacing it with the backup file from my storage drive. No joy. I can access the web and use other applications no problem, as long as I use the backup file first. Also, I can receive email in Outlook 6 just fine, but it crashes if I try to send anything. I spoke to a customer of mine last night and he said the exact same thing was happening with HIS Outlook Express. I didn't get what OS or MSOE version he was using. He said it was probably some new virus, but Norton and Stopsign both come up clean. Repeatedly, even after updating. Wierd, huh? BTW, my ISP is QIS.net. Never heard of Coterel of Annapolis. I'm going to check out the article for Win XP just in case, but I must say this situation this is all too wierd for words. I this explains my problem a little better. The problems you are having with Tapi services are beyond the scope of this
particular newsgroup. But, the simplest solution might just be to try using another modem since the problem may be hardware related or someone may have attempted to alter a "modem on hold" setting. It's hard to tell and may require some assistance from a local computer shop to resolve. Or you can ask in a Windows XP hardware newsgroup. Again, all I can think of is to ask the question in a hardware newsgroup for Windows 98 and see if they have any other suggestions. The requirement to invoke TAPI services should be automatic if your modem is working as intended. And if you've had recent storms in your area while the computer was connected, (and it does not need to be "on") it's quite possible that the modem is "fried." Modems are relatively inexpensive these days and fairly simple to replace. If you have a friend who's handy with a computer and a screwdriver, it might be worth trying. As for local computer shops, there are several, but they all want me to bring it in (and charge me $85-$95 just to look at it) and I can't afford the downtime. Thus the reason I've been trying to find a solution online. Is there any chance at all that this could be a virus? BTW Jim, thank you for the links. It didn't really help, because it was XP oriented and I run 98SE, but thank you anyway.
