Default Why does Powerpoint lock up when I format design template?

I am using Powerpoint 2002. When I try to format a new design, Powerpoint
locks up, and I have to go to Task Manager and end the application. What can
I do to fix this problem?

Do you mean that you are in View Master Slide Master and making changes
there to the Master? What kind of changes are you making? What do you do
*just* before the lockup?

No, when I start a new file, I choose "format," then "slide design" and
cannot go any further. If I hit "control, alt, delete," I go to the task
master and it says the program is not responding.

I would first try to do a Detect and Repair. Go to the Help menu.
