Default Word 2002 borders do not print anywhere in document

Hi,

I am in the process of formatting a Microsoft Word 2002 document. The
problem is with the use of borders that are underneath text, are used
as a box around text within the printable area of a document or used as
an overline above the text to improve the page layout.

For example: at the top of a document within the printed area you may
wish to do the following.

Chapter Title
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Normally, in order to draw this line I would use a border however if I
use a border it will show up in the "print preview" but it will not
print.

In another example, if I wanted to place a border around the text
completely forming a box and saving the document this will not print
either, i.e.
_________
|dfsdfsd| (Of course, the box using borders would be better formed)
---------
In the final example, if I wish to use a border in the footer above the
text as follows:

__________________________________________________ _______
Bla Bla Bla Bla

It will show up in the print preview but it will not print even if the
margins and the footer dimension (distance from bottom edge) are
correct.

So after all these tests what it tells me is that I am unable to use
borders in my documents... The printer that I am using is a HP desk Jet
540.

The strange thing is that if I create a table and save the document the
table will print out but not those borders as mentioned above.

**Work arounds....
This problem can be worked-around by using a line object or a picture
in any of these places. However this does not solve the problem of why
the borders do not print.

Does anybody know why these borders are not printing? Is this problem
fixed in 2003?

Alex: It's not a Word shortcoming. It's definitely something to do with your
machine or your printer. With such an old printer, I'd be replacing that
first. You can get a comparable one at Walmart for like $50 these days.
Anyway, I would try to fix in this order and only go to the next item if the
previous one didn't work:
a) make sure that you have the most recent printer driver for that printer
and your operating system
b) make sure you've got ink
c) clean your hard drive
(http://www.officearticles.com/misc/h...hard_drive.htm)
d) troubleshoot Word
(http://www.officearticles.com/word/s...osoft_word.htm)
e) buy new printer
