Default Word 2000 Autotextlist in a Template

Is there anyway to have a new document locked and be able to select from an autotextlist. If the document stays locked, it skips right over the place I have autotextlist inserted. It works if the document is unlocked but makes it more difficult to complete the rest of the form. This form is meant for end users that are not completely pc-friendly . . I need to make this form as simple to complete as possible - - and asking them to lock & unlock makes it too complicated.
