Default Type halfway shows, top cut off and is very small

When I first open a new document the type is always too small to read and the
top is cut off. I can increase the font size and use the buttons to space it
down but this is very annoying and I know something must be setup wrong. Also
it sometimes will not space right, will overlap the first row of type. Are
there preferences someplace that I can correct this, have not found anyplace
where it will stick.

Any suggestions woud be most helpful.

Sounds like your paragraph's settings are messed up. Which version of Word
are you using?
