Default configuration of ODBC (*.dbf) dBase drivers failed, what can I do.

HI, I am trying to download microsoft office 97 back onto my computer after
reformatting the hard drive. I get an eror message as follows configuration
of ODBC microsoft dBase (*.dbf) driver failed. How can I fix this? Is there
a patch/downlad I can get and exactly where do I find it? I have gone to the
office website but it seems to be totally about office 2003, and has little
or nothing helpful that a tech-moron can understand. I need to get word back
as all my documents are n word, and currently trying to do everything in
works is screwing up the documents, garbling some of the data. Years of
important data are at stake!
thanks
Andrew
