How do I setup multiple styles for numbered headings in a document

Dear All,

I would like to setup Multiple Level-1 Heading with numbering.

I fomatted heading 1 into the style I like, which included numbering as
follows:

Level 1: "Chapter 1" formatted to the right of the page
I then press a soft-enter to type in the text describing the
chapter
Level 2: "1.1" followed by the title of the sub-chapter, etc.

This works beautifully for the task that I want it to do, and the index is
in the exact format that I would like it.

However, at the end of my Chapters I want to introduce a new Heading-1
Style, where the words Chapter X are replaced by Appendix X.

I don't know how to do that? If I create a new style, then it is not
included into the index. If I create a section break and try to change the
formatting of heading-1 it still affects the whole document.

How should I go about this problem?

I for one would love to know how you set the styles. I have a similar
situation - Styles for numbering in this fasion - 1, then 1.1, 1.2, then
1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.2.3, etc. When I begin Chapter 2, I'm having trouble with
the numbers "1.2.1, etc" changing to 2.2.1, 2.2.2, 2.2.3.

I'm not fond of this particular numbering format, but my document requires
it, and it's 100+ pages long.

Any suggestions?

Since I posted my query, I have managed to get what I need to work. First I
will answer your question Littlebear and then elborate on the answer to my
own question:

Littlebear, to have automatic numbering of the headings, you should
manipulate the styles of the built-in headings. This is described in
"http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/WordsNumberingExplained.htm" - Follow
"Chapter Numbering"

Basically, access the "Styles and Formatting" side panel.
Hoover your mouse over the "Heading 1" format and click on the arrow.
Then click on "Modify"
Then click on "Format"
and then "Numbering"

Select the style you mentioned as it is a default one, or create your own if
it isn't. Yours is a default numbering style to simply click on it.

By clicking on "OK" until you get out of all the windows and back to the
word program, you will see that the numbering format has been applied.

Now when you want to apply the different numbers levels, simply choose the
appropriate heading level.

If you are already doing this and applying heading 1 always yields "1." then
it has to do with a tick box that you can access from the numbering panel
mentioned above. There click on "Customize" and uncheck the box which
indicates "restart counting after - "

As for my own question the reply is as follows.

I created the style I wished; identical to Heading 1 in all, but key word.
"Appendix" instead of "Chapter". This included setting a numbering structure
similar to that of Heading 1

I simply had to click on insert "Table of contents". There I needed to click
on Options, and attribute TOC=1 to my style which I named "Appendix 1".

I did something similar for Appendix 2, 3, etc and got exactly what I was
looking for.
