Default How can I keep contacts on my pc but not in Hotmail?

I have a hotmail.com account and Outlook 2007 as my email client. I would
like to keep my email contacts only in Outlook, not on hotmail. In Outlook,
I'm confused by 'address book' and 'contacts' and 'contacts in personal
folders' etc.... 'Contacts' seems to point to my hotmail.com account. It
has an 'Outlook Address Book' whose name is 'Contacts in '.
'Contacts in Personal Folders' seems to point to \\Personal Folders and has
an Outlook Address Book called 'Contacts'. 'Tools...Address Book' shows
two address books in a pop-up window: 'Outlook Address Book' and 'contacts in
'. I'm confused!

If I open an email and want to save the sender's details, I
right-mouse-click the senders's name and email address, then select 'Add to
Outlook Contacts'. I was hoping this would be stored somewhere just in
Outlook, but it seems it gets stored also in the online Contacts folder in my
hotmail.com account.

More info... In Tools...Address Book, I select 'Outlook Address Book'.
There are no entries here, so I select File...New Entry, I select 'New
Contact' and 'put this entry' into 'Outlook Address Book' (rather than
'Contacts in '). But I get a msg "you cannot create
entries for this Address Book" !!

If you see "Contacts" and "Contacts in Personal Folders", then the data store
containing "Contacts" is your delivery location (i.e., the data store chosen
as default in ToolsAccount SettingsData Files). From your description, this
appears to be the Hotmail data store and you have a PST as well whose display
name is "Personal Folders".

If I open an email and want to save the sender's details, I
right-mouse-click the senders's name and email address, then select 'Add to

By definition, the default folders are the folders in the delivery location
data store. This means that any New command (i.e., new Contact, Note, Meeting
Request, Appointment, etc.) will create the item in the appropriate folder in
the delivery location. If you want the Add to Outlook Contacts to create the
contact in the "Contacts in Personal Folders", then you have two choices:
either make the "Personal Folders" data store the delivery location (i.e.,
select it as default on the Data Files tab), or click FileMove to Folder on
the contact form that opens and specify the Contacts folder in the Personal
Folders data store. My personal choice is to have the local PST the default
data store and have the Hotmail data store as an added store.

Brian - thanks, seems to work fine. One further question, if I may (I don't
think this is related, if it isn't I'll gladly post in the correct discussion
group): I have two sets of Outlook mail folders, "Personal Folders" and my
online Hotmail folders. I have an Inbox folder in Personal Folders, and I
manually drag 'n' drop mail there from the Hotmail Inbox folder. This
appears to be a 'copy' - is there any way I can get this to be a 'move', so I
don't have to go online to Hotmail and manually them? Better still, can
things be set up such that mail in my Hotmail Inbox automatically gets moved
to Personal Folders ... Inbox whenever I start up Outlook?

Thanks, Guy

When I drag and drop from Hotmail to local folders, it's a move. Only if I
right-click and drag, choosing Copy is is a copy. The server should get the
correct information at the next sync.

If you access Hotmail via POP, then you can have Outlook download and delete
Hotmail messages. The POP account cannot manipulate Calendar or Contacts on
the Hotmail server, though, since POP is a mail only protocol. One thing you
can do is to set up two accounts: the Hotmail Connector-mediated account and a
POP account referencing the Hotmail mailbox. This will pull all mail on
Hotmail to the local PST-based folders, but still allow you to access the
other Hotmail features using the Hotmail Connector.
