Default Horizontal (Category) Axis

How do I change the horizontal (category) axis so that the text in that area
is at a horizontal angle?

Assuming you haven't upgraded to 2007 (the majority still haven't), right
click on the axis and choose Format Axis, click on the Alignment tab, and in
the Orientation group of controls, set the alignment of the labels.

In 2007 it's basically the same thing, though the "tabs" look less like tabs
than they used to.

Jon,
First of all I do have the 2007 version and thank you for assisting me in
this matter. Now I have a different problem concerning the same axis. When I
try to display the text in a horizontal position I end up loosing one the
text labels.

On the main tab of the format axis dialog, there is a place for you to set
the number of categories between labels. Change this to 1.
