Link from Excel worksheet to Powerpoint truncated
Subject : When I try to copy paste a table from excel to powerpoint, the
corresponding file path to have updated automatically is not correctly kept in the ppt file. Details : I'musing Powerpoint 2007 and Excel 2007 I have an excel file usually updated and I would like to copy paste the charts and tables in a powerpoint file, and to have only to click on the "Update link" button when I open my ppt file, to have all my data refreshed with what present in the excel file. It's correctly working with a simple copy paste for the charts, but not for the tables. The issue is the following Steps: 1. I copy my table from excel worksheet (select the table and do a simple Ctrl + C) 2. I go on my ppt file and do Paste - Paste Special - Paste links - Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet Object 3. I check the path identified for this table by the ppt file, so I click on Menu - Prepare - Edit Links to Files. The link here is correct (e.g D:\Documents and Settings\...\last folder\file.xlsx) 4. I save my ppt file and then close ppt. 5. I open again my ppt file and go to check the path for the table pasted. The path has been truncated and it only remains last folder\file.xlsx), so the file is not able to retrieve the excel data to update my table. |

Is the link longer than 128 characters? That would cause it to truncate.

Sure, my link is about 155 characters, I will save my excel file closer to
the root to have less characters in my path. Thank you it helps. "Michael Koerner" wrote: Is the link longer than 128 characters? Hi,
Unfortunately, I now checked that this is still not working. Now my links have less than 128 characters (I move my file to another folder to have a shorter path), but powerpoint still truncate the link of my tables at the same folder. EX : my file was before located at D:\Documents and Settings\folder 1\folder A\file.xlsx truncated at folder A\files.xlsx I moved it to D:\folder A\file.xlsx truncated at folder A\files.xlsx "Michael Koerner" wrote: Glad to hear that it worked. Once you moved it, did you reinsert it again with the new path? Try putting
it in the same folder as your presentation and then insert it into your presentation and see what happens. The 128 characters also includes spaces in the count. -- Michael Koerner MS MVP - PowerPoint "AleVe" wrote in message ... Hi, Unfortunately, I now checked that this is still not working. Hi,
After moving my excel file, I reopened my powerpoint and correctly reinserted all the sharts and tables. As told, the charts are correctly refreshed when updating my excel file, but the tables aren't (due to this path issue). I still don't understand why the full path is not kept, since I verified that the total path was under a total of 128 characters. Thanks for your answer, but I just checked and the Hyperlink Base was well
left blank. "Steve Rindsberg" wrote: I'm not sure if this will have an effect, but check the presentation properties; Make sure Hyperlink Base is blank. Pack a lunch; this is a far longer trip than it ever deserved to be: Office Button | Prepare | Properties Basic doc properties appear above the slide Click the downarrow next to "Document Properties" Choose Advanced Properties Click the Summary tab in the Presentation Properties dialog bx that appears Hyperlink Base is the last textbox at the bottom. Hi Steve,
Not any add-ins could deal with the issue. One strange thing is that, when I refer to the office support, to check how to copy paste excel tables, in order to keep the link between excel and ppt, they explain that a simple Crtl C, Ctrl V works, and checking the paste options. The fact is that when I copy paste my table I don't even see these paste options (they're correctly acrivated in the powerpoint general options and work fine with the charts once more). "Steve Rindsberg" wrote: OK, at least we know we can eliminate that. Are you running any add-ins that might deal with links and such?
