Default Word 2000 and Portuguese (Brazil) Language

When typing in Word and having the default language set to English (UK) or
English (US), the language will automatically change to Portuguese (Brazil)
even though automatically detect language is not turned on. We have noticed
this with many, many documents. We do have the language indicator displayed
in the system tray -- operating system is Windows 2000? Has anyone else
experienced the same and is there a reason this is happening -- such as a
keyboard shortcut that I may not be aware of? Thank yo for your help.
