Stop page numbering

I am using Word 2000

I have a 15 page document. 13 pages are text. the last 2
pages are the "Table of Contents". In the header of the
first 13 pages I have "page x of XX" which should end at
page 13. But it is picking up the last 2 pages and ends
with a count total of 15. How do I stop it from counting
the last 2 pages?

You are in fact using two fields in your header: If you go into your
header and click Alt F9 (Show field codes), you'll see something like this:

{ page } of { numpages }

What you need to do first is insert a section break (of type: next page)
at the end of page 13 (in the main text area). Now, with the cursor in
your new "Section 2", go into the header and footer, and make sure that
"Same as previous" is not ticked. You haven't told us what you want the
header and footer to read in your TOC, now you can insert whatever you
like there. Then, go back into section 1 and change the "numpages" to
"sectionpages". Hit Alt F9 again, and then F9 (update). Voilà!

one section within the area to be included. But what=20
would I do if I had several sections - due to margin=20
changes and/or paper orientation etc. In Work Perfect,=20
you could add a code at the bottom of the last page you=20
wanted to stop counting at. Does Word not have this=20
capability?
What would I do if I had a document with 4 sections in it=20
and wanted to keep the total pages limited to the first 3=20
sections?

Word does not have this particular way to resolve your problem, but some

You somehow need to (dynamically) count the pages of the first 3
sections, directly or indirectly. The latter approach seems the best way
to go, namely to subtract the number of pages of the last section from
the number of pages of the total document. [Note: I've never before done
this specific sort of thing, so there might well be an easier method!].

1. You place a SECTIONPAGES field at the end of your last section. You
can later mark it with white text and 1pt font size so that it won't
disturb your pagination at all (hidden text was my first impulse, but
that doesn't seem to work :-().

2. Then select the field, update it (F9), and insert a bookmark there
(Insert | Bookmark).

Then, in one of your previous section(s), you insert the following field:

{ PAGE } of { = { NUMPAGES }-{ REF yourBookmarkName } }

be doing something wrong, because it is not quite working=20
correctly. This is what I did. =20

I went to the last page of the text I wanted counted which=20
is page 13. (There is a total of 17 pages now) After the=20
text, I entered 6 returns and added a bookmark=20
called "LastPg". Then I went to the header, where I=20
have "Page x of xx". I deleted the xx code, went to=20
InsertCross Reference and made Ref Type =3D Bookmark and=20
Ref To =3D Page Number and highlighted the one and only=20
bookmark - LastPg. I Did not check either box.
and said Insert. The page number comes up OK but it is=20
page 14 when it should be page 13. Any idea of what I did=20
wrong?

Are you sure all those Enters didn't force the bookmark to the next page?
What was the purpose of adding the empty paragraphs?

Thank you for your help. My purpose was to make sure the=20
bookmark was at the end of the document, in case later on=20
more information was added towards the end of the=20
document. I even added a comment to remind myself that=20
the line above the comment contained the bookmark for=20
counting the pages. The section-page break came after=20
this. My screen told me I was still on page 13 at the=20
bookmark. =20

I re-did it today and it worked. Maybe my confuser=20
(computer) wasn't in the mood to work right yesterday. =20
Who knows.
