Default Word creates new styles even though the function is turned off

Hi

Word 2003 seem to make new styles like "Normal + Verdana 15pt" even though
the AutoFormat As You Type function "Define styles based on your formatting"
is NOT checked.

How do I avoid Word making new styles? The Styles and Formatting Task Pane
becomes a total mess because of this when I format text.

Best regards, Arne Bratlie

It isn't really creating new styles, but it looks like it. It is keeping
track of each unique combination of formatting. This makes it easier to
create a style at a later time and apply it to all similarly formatted text.

Yes it is a mess, which you can avoid by not applying direct formatting so
much. Otherwise, if you don't want to see the hash you are making of your
document structure, you can turn off the option to keep track of formatting.
