Must I download Office Service Pack?
No, you don't need to download Service Pack 3. In fact
there is no need to download anything if you are confident of your security system such as anti-virus/firewall and you have reasonable knowledge of computer siftware and hardware. Patches are one way of keeping Bill Gates' programmers busy. Have a nice evening. John -----Original Message----- . |

We recommend installation of service packs to ensure that your system stays
secure and to prevent crashes. Users who have opted in to Microsoft "Error Reporting" send data to us about their crashes. We then fix the bugs which cause crashes most often and push out these fixes in Service Packs. -- Thanks, Eric Lawrence Program Manager Assistance and Worldwide Services This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Must I download Office Service Pack?
Thank you, Eric and John, for your responses. But they
don't really react to my problem. Since I see that my discussion was not posted, here it is: I have Word 2002 on my computer (and the rest of the Works 2002 Suite). The Office download center reports that I should download the latest Office Service Packs. I don't have Office, only -- as I said earlier -- the Word 2002 component of Office. The listing of the contents of the service pack shows a lot of patches/updates for Word as well as for other components of Office. My questions: Should I download that nearly 50 minutes of non- Word "stuff" just to get the specific file or files for Word? If I DO download the entire Office SP, and since I would want only the Word portions to be installed, what happens to the downloaded but uninstalled OTHER, non-Word portions? Do they remain on the hard drive, taking up lots of real estate (after all, it will take 50 minutes to download that SP!)? Can they be easily deleted? I'd appreciate your response. So, please respond to my (unmodified)email address: . Thank you. -----Original Message----- No, you don't need to download Service Pack 3. Again, Eric and John, thank you for taking the time to
respond. But I fear you have not read my discussion. Whether or not to download Office service packs is not a question for me of safety; it's a question of what to do with all the non-Word patches on that enormous service pack when Word is the only Office program I have. PLEASE ADVISE. -----Original Message----- Thank you, Eric and John, for your responses. But they don't really react to my problem. While you do need to download the whole thing, the installer is smart enough
to only install the parts you need. No need to fear filling up your disk. -- Thanks, Eric Lawrence Program Manager Assistance and Worldwide Services This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. It just tells me there is another browser window open and to close it. There is no other browser window open, only the one on the office update page. Go figure. Probably end up sending for the CD. Thank you, Eric, for your response. BUT -- if I DO
download the whole thing and let the installer install only the parts I need, isn't the rest of the service pack STILL on the hard disk, only not installed? How would I get rid of all that unneeded, uninstalled stuff? -----Original Message----- While you do need to download the whole thing, the installer is smart enough to only install the parts you need. Norm, we are talking 16 mb here - how much room do you have on your drive?

The .EXE is in your Temporary Internet Files and will be automatically
deleted by Internet Explorer. Or you can run Disk Cleanup. -- Thanks, Eric Lawrence Program Manager Assistance and Worldwide Services This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
