windows xp, Some sounds work and some do not

When I open some sounds, they work. When I try to open other sounds, they do
not work. For instance ,electronic Hallmark cards will not work. When I
boot up or close down, the sounds do not work. When a new email arrives, the
beep does not work telling me an email has arrived.

When I got to windows, media and click on the individual sound bites, they
work. help please.

This is windows xp on a Dell desktop.
