Default Trying to compact folders

When I go of line and try to compact All Folders, then on the Inbox and
Deleted Items the compacting stops and I get a message "Another program is
using this folder". Then the compacting stops on these two folders. Anyone
have any idea what is causing this?

Thanks for any insight on this matter.

Default Trying to compact folders

Click on Local Folders and then go offline and try.

If still no joy, move any messages you wish to save out of all default
folders to local folders you create, delete the rest and try again.

Also try compacting one folder at a time in necessary.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

Bruce, thanks for the reply. I did what you suggested and I still get, when
compacting, the message "This folder is being used by another application"
and the compacting then stops. What is your opinion on deleting the Inbox?
Do you think that it is corrupted? If I go and delete the Inbox.dbx will it
then automatically build a new Inbox? This problem just started in the last
few days.
Thank you for your help,
Ken A

Bruce I found out what was causing the compacting not to work properly. I
had installed a program called "Cyber Defender", which is a virus and
malware checking program. I uninstalled it and now the compacting problem
is gone.
Thank you again for your help.

Default Trying to compact folders

I did not mean to make identical post to multiple newsgroups. I did post
to another newsgroup and then realized that I was in the wrong newsgroup.
That is why I posted in this newsgroup. Sorry if you had to read this post
twice.

You're welcome. Many third party programs cause problems with OE and it is
hard to keep up with all of them. Thanks for the feedback.
