Default Default Mail Client

Outlook Express and Incredimail both tell me that they are not the default mail client. If I tell Outlook Express that I want it to be the default client - it appears to accept that - but when I exit OE and go back in it still says that it is not the default.

When I click on a Mailto: link I get an error message that says "Could not perform this operation because a default mail client is not properly installed".

I have tried running "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE" /REG but it has no effect.

I have also tried the www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm #64 to reset OE for Mail to, but I get an error message that says "Error accessing the registry". I was able to run the SEND_TO update but not the MAIL_TO.

This seemed to have started when I installed Mozilla Firefox to look at it and then uninstalled it.

Any ideas???

I tried oedef.aspx; then...oelnk.aspx. However - when I do oelnk.aspx - the action is blank when I go to the file type - so I add open and "C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /mailurl:%1 as the application. I then click OK and it appears to save.

But when I go back into the file type - the change is gone. What am I missing?

'Use DDE' should be checked.

Application should read 'msimn' (w/out the quotes)

Topic should read "System' (w/out the quotes)

I followed your instructions below - but still no luck. Even though DDE was checked and the additional fields filled in - when I clicked OK it appeared to save my changes. But when I go back in - they are all gone.

I tried the step by step instructions listed in the other links including running the program to repair the registry.

Still no luck. OE thinks it is NOT the default client even though I have tried setting it to be the default multiple times.

Did you try...

Restores OE to the E-mail clients list in Internet Options
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/oe_client.htm

Have you installed a browser other than Internet Explorer? Have you
uninstalled it and enabled "IE should check to see if it's the default" at
IE ToolsInternet OptionsPrograms? Is IE the default browser at Control
PanelAdd/Remove ProgramsSet Program Access and Defaults? Is OE the
default Mail Client there?

If still no joy, try repairing or reinstalling both IE and OE per

Hi,

Assuming Windows 2000/XP:

First, login as Administrator and apply the scripts. "Error accessing =
the registry" might denote a permission issue. To confirm that, try =
directly from the registry. Click Start/Run and type Regedit. If running =
2000/XP, see if you have 'Full Control' for this key and sub-keys. That =
might be the reason you got the error, and that the settings are not =
saved.:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto]

You can verify the Permission entries by right-clicking the above key in =
the registry and choosing 'Permissions'. Set Write access or "Full =
Controle" to this key and re-apply the fixes.
